Guest House Blu Ray Review (Lionsgate)
Guest House is a 2020 comedy film co-written, produced, & directed by Sam Macaroni (TV: The Movie, The Life of Lucky Cucumber, Jay Mohr: American Treasure, & Blackout). It was co wr-tten by Sean Bishop (Star Wars: Return of the Empire, Shrek the Halls, & Shark Tale). It was produced & co-written by Troy Duffy (The Boondock Saints, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, Knight Rider 2016, & Overnight). Newly engaged couple Blake (played by: Mike Castle from Brews Brothers, VanLife, & Clipped) & Sarah (played by: Aimee Teegarden from Rings, Scream 4, Beneath the Darkness, & Friday Night Lights) just purchased their dream home but with it comes with one provision. A party animal named Randy (played by: Pauly Shore from Bio-Dome, Encino Man, Jury Duty, & Son in Law) lives in the guest house & refuses to move out.
The couple give him three months to pack up & leave before he ruins their backyard wedding but Randy is quite content staying right where he is. When Randy throws a raging pool party in their backyard, the police (played by: Erik Griffin from Workaholics, The Sleepover, Murder Mystery, & Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates) show up & Blake winds up getting arrested. Sarah’s father Douglas Masters (played by: Billy Zane from The Phantom, Titanic, Back to the Future Part II, & Dead Calm) doesn’t like Mike anyways so this situation makes everything worse. It’s the final straw, Blake & Sarah now will do almost anything to get Randy to leave. A war between the neighbors begins & it gets crazier every day!!!!
Comedian Pauly Shore hasn’t had a leading role in a long time. This might be an independent but it still had some hype going for it when it came to the actor. It’s the return of the weasel & he goes back to his classic humor for Guest House. If you are fan of his older & known work, you will love this one. Mike Castle, Aimee Teegarden, & Pauly Shore all had good chemistry here as the leads. Comedian Sam Macaroni put together & directed a solid low budget comedy with a very solid supporting cast plus some hilarious cameos. It has all kinds of familiar faces in this like Billy Zane, Erik Griffin, Lou Ferrigno (The Incredible Hulk), Chris Kattan (Saturday Night Live), Steve-O (Jackass), Bobby Lee (Splitting Up Together), & special fx legend Tom Woodruff Jr. (Alien franchise). The script was over the top but it had more than a few laugh out loud moments in it especially the possum scenes. It had some drama to balance out everything towards the end. It’s a pretty crazy & dark comedy at times, I was surprised by it. It had some great nudity during the party scenes. I honestly wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did but it’s one of the best comedies that I’ve seen or reviewed in 2020. RECOMMENDED!!!!
Let’s talk about the high definition presentation & special features from Lionsgate! This 1080p (1.78:1) looks really good for an low budget independent feature. The English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 & Spanish: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 tracks were great when it came to the music in this. It had a real nice boost for the soundtrack & party scenes. All of the dialogue was crystal clear here. It has English SDH, French, Portuguese, & Spanish subtitles. It has a little over 11 minutes of 7 “Deleted Scenes” for Guest House. It’s a nice bonus to have but I definitely see why these didn’t make the final cut. Most of it is filler material. “Behind the Scenes” is a little over 3 minutes. It has interviews with Billy Zane, Tom Woodruff Jr., Erik Griffin, Chris Kattan, several cast members, & various crew members for Guest House. It has behind the scenes footage. The actors talk about their characters & experience here. It goes over the special fx & stunts for the production. It has a “Trailer” for the feature plus other “Trailers” from Lionsgate. It has a slipcover & a digital code. It’s available today everywhere on home video or video on demand, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
