American Pie Presents: Girls’ Rules DVD Review (Universal)

American Pie Presents: Girls’ Rules is a 2020 sex comedy film produced & directed by Mike Elliott (The Scorpion King 4: Quest for Power, Blue Crush 2, & Beethoven’s Big Break). Elliott was the second unit director on American Pie Presents: The Book of Love & he produced American Pie Presents: Band Camp. It’s a spin off of the American Pie series. It was written by Blayne Weaver (Manic, Cut to the Chase, Honey 2, & The Prince & Me franchise) & David H. Steinberg (American Pie 2, American Pie Presents: The Book of Love, Kindergarten Cop 2, & Grand-Daddy Day Care). It was produced by Joseph P. Genier (War, Undercover Brother 2, How High 2, Automation, Teen Wolf, & American Pie Presents: Band Camp). It’s the first American Pie film that doesn’t feature the Noah Levenstein character. It went direct to video.

Now that it’s their senior year, four best friends decide to make the best of out their time together. Annie Watson (played by: Madison Pettis from Five Points, The Game Plan, The Fosters, & Seven Pounds), Kayla (played by: Piper Curda from The Wretched, School Spirits, & Rule the Mix), Michelle (played by: Natasha Behnam from Bloody Hands, Animal Kingdom, & One-Night) & Stephanie Stifler (played by: Lizze Broadway from Here and Now, A Killer Walks Amongst Us, Instakiller, & The Lost Boys) band together to harness their girl power to get what they want. Each one of them is single at the same time & they want to have a little fun with it. They put together a competition between each other to see who can hook up with new kid Grant (played by: Darren Barnet from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Turnt, Never Have I Ever, & Instakiller) first. Which one will win it all when it comes to these girl rules? Is it worth risking their long friendship????

I am a big fan of the first few American Pie movies & I even thought a few of the spin offs were decent but the last few films from this franchise have went downhill especially this one. It’s not a good sign when even Eugene Levy doesn’t show up here because he’s been in every American Pie feature so far. I understand that after 8 other movies, they wanted to try something different here but it didn’t work at all in this direct to video spin off. They tried to do the female side for American Pie & they even had a female Stifler as one of the leads. I will say that the main girls had decent chemistry together. I thought Madison Pettis & Lizze Broadway were actually solid in this. Girls Rules does provide some decent eye candy with it’s female leads but the acting for the most part is pretty bad here. That’s nothing new for these type of features but the script was awful so it didn’t really do any favors to the struggling cast when it came to performances. They tried too hard to make most of the guys look like douche bags & almost all of those roles were nothing special here. The jokes fell flat for the most part with a few good moments but lots of them were cringe worthy. Honestly, the best thing about Girls Rules was the supporting cast which included a few familiar faces like Danny Trejo (Heat), Clint Howard (Ice Cream Man), Barry Bostwick (The Rocky Horror Picture Show), Ed Quinn (Eureka), & Sara Rue (Pearl Harbor). Girls Rules feels more like a rip off than an actual official movie of the American Pie series. It’s really tame for being a sex comedy. I hope the next one is better if they keep making these. It’s not the worst film that I’ve seen this year but it’s definitely one you should watch first before you buy it. Luckily, it’s on Netflix right now. The (1.78:1) transfer is solid especially for being on DVD. It has two audio options which includes English: Dolby Digital 5.1 & Spanish: Dolby Digital 5.1 on here. These films sound great when it comes to the music & soundtrack, this one is no different. All of the dialogue is crystal clear. It has English SDH, Japanese, Spanish, & Thai subtitles. There’s no special features on this home video release & it’s on DVD for the moment. It has a slipcover. It’s available everyone right now.
