Feed Blu Ray Review (Unearthed Films)

Feed is a 2005 body horror film directed by Brett Leonard (The Lawnmower Man, The Dead Pit, Virtuosity, Man-Thing, Highlander: The Source, and Hideaway). It was written by Kieran Galvin (Other People, Bad Ass Mono-Winged Angel, and Puppy). It was co-produced by lead actors Alex O’Loughlin (Hawaii Five-0) and Patrick Thompson (All Saints) who also came up with the concept for Feed. It grossed $33,004 worldwide at the box office. A veteran of Internet porn investigations, Detective Philip Jackson (played by: Patrick Thompson from Man-Thing, Felony, and The Road Killers) is unfortunately no stranger to the dangerous side of weird sexual fetishes online. He just found his sickest case so far when he discovers a twisted side to a shocking website devoted to fat-admiring men and obese women called “feeders” and “gainers.” Could Michael Carter (played by: Alex O’Loughlin from The Shield, Whiteout, The Back-up Plan, The Invisible, Moonlight, and August Rush) be the one behind all the disturbing force-feeding all these missing women to death???? You look at director Brett Leonard’s resume and he’s done some really big projects over the years. Feed was one of his earliest efforts behind the camera and it’s extremely dark. I was kinda surprised he actually did this one when I first watched it a long time ago. Alex O’Loughlin helped come up with the demented concept and he co-produced it. He really blew up as an actor a few years after doing this one, you mostly likely know him as the star of the Hawaii Five-0 reboot. He’s very impressive as the psychotic Michael Carter in Feed. He’s married to a beautiful woman and everyone just thinks that he’s a regular guy. He has a dark secret life that almost no one knows about. He’s a villain that you won’t forget which is always good. Patrick Thompson as Philip Jackson is honestly just average playing the hero. He helped come up with the idea with O’Loughlin and he co-produced Feed so it’s not a surprise that he’s the other lead. He’s not horrible or anything but they could have done much better. Gabby Millgate (Full Frontal) gives one of the bravest performances that I’ve ever seen in this. It’s a very strange role but she doesn’t hold back at all. She really enjoys this wild game at first. The rest of the supporting cast includes Jack Thompson (Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones), Rose Ashton (White Collar Blue), Matthew Le Nevez (Man-Thing), David Field (Preacher), Marika Aubrey (Spirited). David Will No (The Matrix Reloaded), Yure Covich (Thor: Love and Thunder), and Imogen Bailey (Neighbours). The script is very unique when it comes to the horror genre. It’s wild because it’s a legit fetish, people don’t get feed to death like here but it actually happens in real life for the other stuff. Feed gets really gross at times, there’s no filter here. It’s definitely an original entry for the Body Horror sub-genre, I’ve never experienced anything like this before. Feed is packed with tension, thrills, and suspense. I can see this one being hard to watch for some viewers because it pushes it’s boundaries like it’s nothing. Feed is really entertaining in the most demented ways and it stays with you for a long time. RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from Unearthed Films! This 1080p (1.85:1) unrated transfer is a massive improvement over it’s previous older DVD home video release. Feed is very stylish for it’s visuals and cinematography so it looks great here especially being a lower budget production. It has a few different audio options which includes English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and English: LPCM 2.0 tracks on the disc. The soundtrack really pounds in your home set up when it comes to the audio here. All of the dialogue is crystal clear, the tension is elevated, and the music has a huge boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. It has an “Audio Commentary” with director Brett Leonard. Leonard has always been great at doing these for his movies. He provides so much information and he shares lots of personal behind the scenes stories. He calls this a Black Comedy. He used a good amount of the cast and crew from his Man-Thing feature. It’s very detailed, it was nice to learn more about Feed. It has the little over 91 minute “U.S. Cut” for Feed as a bonus. It has a few different audio options for it. It has 10 different “Deleted Scenes” that’s 21 minutes with optional commentary from the director. I see why most of these didn’t make the final cut but there’s still cool to have on here. It has 41 more minutes of “Deleted and Extended Scenes”. They filmed lots of additional footage for Feed that ended up on the cutting room floor. It has the 2 minute “Alternate Ending” with optional commentary from the director. It’s something the investors wanted shot for something different as the finale. It has the 4 minute “Final Day Interview” with director Brett Leonard. He chats about wrapping up the feature and finishing up everything for Feed. It has 11 minutes of “Outtakes”. It has the 6 minute “Interview” with Alex O’Loughlin. He chats about how they came up with the idea and the research for it. He brings up how this really got to him so it motivated them to get it made. It has an “Interview” with Jack Thompson that’s only a minute. He talks about it being very weird and odd film. It has the 5 minute “Interview” with Melissa Beauford. She talks about being a lawyer on Brett Leonard’s previous project. She goes over involvement with Feed and her experiences from it’s origins. It has the 9 minute “Feed in Philadelphia: The North American Premiere”. It shows some of the questions and answers after the screening. It features Alex O’Loughlin and Melissa Beauford responding to the audience. It has 28 minutes of “Behind the Scenes Footage”. This mainly focuses on the development, creation, and testing of the fat suit used in Feed. It has the 8 minute “Infomercial”. It’s a hilarious parody using the cast and crew from the movie. It’s actually pretty damn funny. It has a quick “Still Gallery” and a “Trailer”. Unearthed Films kills it again for home video, this disc is loaded with all kinds of special features. They gave Feed proper treatment for It’s 20th anniversary. It’s available everywhere right now, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
