FallOut Season One 4K Steelbook Review (Warner Bros.)

Fallout is a 2024 science fiction television series co-written/produced/created by Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel and Tomb Raider) and Graham Wagner (The Office, Baskets, Silicon Valley, and Portlandia). It was directed by Frederick E.O. Toye (The Boys, The Walking Dead, Chuck, and The Terminal List), Jonathan Nolan (Westworld and Person of Interest), Clare Kilner (The Wedding Date, Snowpiercer, Sneaky Pete, and House of the Dragon), Daniel Gray Longino (Super Pumped, Billions, and Kroll Show), and Wayne Che Yip (Doom Patrol, Preacher, Doctor Who, and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power). It’s based on the popular video game franchise. It premiered and aired on Amazon Prime!!!! A strange variety of select groups of haves and have-nots in a dangerous world in which there’s almost nothing left in existence. Lucy (played by: Ella Purnell from Yellowjackets, Star Trek: Prodigy, Arcane, Kick-Ass 2, and Army of the Dead), Maximus (played by: Aaron Moten from The Night Of, Next, Father Stu, Disjointed, and Emancipation), and Cooper/The Ghoul (played by: Walton Goggins from The Shield, Justified, The Righteous Gemstones, The White Lotus, Invincible, and The Hateful Eight) all go through different journeys during this post apocalyptic chaos and they try to survive whatever gets in their way. 200 years after the devastating apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to make a return to the incredibly complex, gleefully weird and highly violent universe waiting for them above at any cost!!!! Fallout is one of the better video game adaptations in recent years. It follows a few different lead characters that are all going through different situations but they all end up connected somehow. Ella Purnell as Lucy MacLean is trying to put her family back together after tragedy. Lucy is experiencing a new environment and world for the very first time. Aaron Moten as Maximus just wants a real chance at accomplishing his dream but his co-workers continue to treat him like a lackey. Maximus will do whatever it takes to be one of the Brotherhood of Steel members. Walton Goggins as Cooper Howard has experienced enough pain in the past. Cooper aKa The Ghoul is a former Hollywood star that lost everything that he cared for so now he walks alone and he only looks out for himself. The rest of the supporting cast includes Kyle MacLachlan (Dune), Zach Cherry (Severance), Michael Emerson (Lost), Fred Armisen (Saturday Night Live), Michael Rapaport (True Romance), Mykelti Williamson (Heat), Moises Arias (The King of Staten Island), Leer Leary (Poker Face), Xelia Mendes-Jones (Havoc), Leslie Uggams (Deadpool franchise), Johnny Pemberton (21 Jump Street), Matt Berry (What We Do in the Shadows), Frances Turner (The Boys), and Sarita Choudhury (Jessica Jones). Fallout covers several different subplots for all of it’s main roles which end up interacting with each other after finally crossing paths. It has excellent character development and build up before it all sets in. It has a good balance of dark humor, action, drama, mystery, and suspense. There’s some interesting twists towards the end and it respects it’s original source material for it’s first season. Dogmeat was probably my favorite character here. Such a great companion to anyone who needed it. I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens next for the future seasons of this wild science fiction universe, RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation from Warner Bros! These 2160p (2.39:1) transfers with Dolby Vision and HDR10 on all 8 episodes look amazing in 4K. It’s one of the most visually stunning TV shows currently on Amazon Prime right now. It’s cinematography, production design, and visual/special fx stand out when it comes to it’s sharp picture quality. It has a few different audio options which includes English: Dolby Atmos, English: Dolby TrueHD 7.1, French: Dolby Digital 5.1, and Spanish: Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks on this three disc set. The audio is top notch for Fallout during all it’s mayhem and disaster while trying to survive it all. All of the dialogue is crisp, the tension is elevated, and the music has a killer boost to it. It has English SDH, French, and Spanish subtitles. This is a very impressive technical home video release! Let’s discuss the special features from Warner Bros! It has the exclusive “Audio Commentary” for the episode “The End” with director Jonathan Nolan and lead actor Walton Goggins on disc 1. They have fun and joke around here while revisiting this one. They chat about it in great detail with plenty of information and inside stories about it. Walton says he was nervous because it was the first time that he played Cooper Howard and he had learn some unique skills in a few days. I wish they did more tracks like this for some of the other episodes. The rest of the extras are located on disc 3. It has the little over 68 minute “Inside Episode 1 “The End” with director Jonathan Nolan and lead actor Walton Goggins. This is a picture and visual version of their commentary. It has the little over 18 minute “Inside Season One”. It has interviews with the cast and crew. They chat about the first season. They bring up the crew, cast, characters, stories, fx, and the video games. It has the little over 17 minute “Vault Sellers Survival Guide – Animated Shorts” that’s broken down to 7 different segments. It has the little over 2 minute “Becoming The Ghoul”. Lead actor breaks down his character. He chats about his past life and the makeup process on the role. It has the almost 3 minute “Console to Camera”. They talk about adapting the video games to television. They show their appreciation for all the work that went into making this a reality. The creators said that others have been trying to make this for a long time but they were never the right fit. It has the almost 4 minute “Creating the Wasteland”. They go over the locations, production design, fx, and it’s environment. It has the little over 3 minute “Meet the Filmmaker”. They talk about using people that knew the original source material and video games. They go over putting together the perfect team for this universe. It has the almost 3 minute “Prosthetics and Makeup Gone Nuclear”. They go over some of the main characters and their different appearances. They point out stuff that makes them all stand out. It has the little over 2 minute “Safe and Sound”. They talk about how important the music and sound design is for this television series. They break down the differences between them and why they were used for certain characters. It has the little over 2 minute “Set Your Sets on 2296”. They go over it’s post apocalyptic look and how they wanted it to have more of a cinema style to it. They bring up some of technical aspects of it. It has the almost 3 minute “The Costumes of Fallout”. They chat about the costumes and visual styles of some of the different roles here. It has the almost 3 minute “Welcome to the World of Fallout”. They go over how they wanted to include a variety of relatable roles made famous from this video game franchise. They wanted to do it justice and make it feel authentic to everything. It has the little over 2 minute “Writing for the Wasteland”. They chat about writing and the video games. They enjoyed the mix of action and comedy. It’s great to see a streaming television series get an actual physical media home video release with all kinds of additional extras. This is definitely worth adding to your collection when it comes to video game adaptations.
