Exhuma Blu Ray Review (Well Go USA)

Exhuma (aKa Pamyo, The Unearthed Grave, and Exhumation) is a 2024 supernatural horror film written and directed by Jang Jae-Hyun (The Priests, House of the Disappeared, and Svaha: The Sixth Finger). It grossed $97,999,382 worldwide at the box office. When respected shaman Lee Hwa-Rim (played by: KIM Go-Eun from A Muse, Guardian, Cheese in the Trap, and Monster) and her upcoming protégé Yoon Bong-Gil (played by: Lee Do-hyun from Sweet Home, Beyond Evil, and 18 Again) are hired by a powerful rich family. They start investigating the unknown cause of a disturbing supernatural illness that always happens with the first-born children of each generation. They get assistance from a skilled mortician Go Yeong-Geun (played by: YOO Hai-jin from A Taxi Driver, The Pirates, Veteran, and 24 Hours to Die) and the most known geomancer around Kim Sang-Deok (played by: CHOI Min-sik from Oldboy, I Saw the Devil, Lucy, Crying Fist, New World, and Lady Vengeance). They finally track down the origin to a secret family grave that’s on sacred ground. They decide to exhume and relocate the ancestral remains right away. Something much sinister shows up, they find out the penalty of digging up the wrong grave!!!! Director Jang Jae-Hyun delivers the best Korean fllm of the year so far and it’s just one of highest quality features in all cinema so far. Exhuma really impressed me, I thought it had potential when I checked out the trailer but it blew me away after I was finished with it. It’s a very dark supernatural production with some amazing special and visual fx. The villains had a rememberable look to them. I haven’t seen a great folk horror in awhile but Exhuma is the clear winner when it comes to recent years. The interesting script keeps you on your toes, it’s something different from the genre. The creepy atmosphere haunts you especially towards the 1st half. Korean legend CHOI Min-sik as Kim Sang-Deok shines in Exhuma. The veteran increases the production value with his strong presence. His character really stood when it came to everyone in this. KIM Go-Eun as Lee Hwa-Rim is probably one of main reasons why this crazy movie did so good in theaters, she’s very popular right now over there. She just demands your attention when she’s on the screen. She’s very easy on the eyes and so talented here. She had excellent chemistry with the entire main cast. Lee Do-hyun as Yoon Bong-Gil and YOO Hai-jin as Go Yeong-Geun round out the rest of this skilled main cast. Each role brought something special and unique to Exhuma. The supporting cast includes Hong Seo-jun (The Devil Judge), Jeon Jin-ki (Lawless Lawyer), Lee Jong-goo (The Chaser), and Kim Jae-cheol (Hyena). The biggest flaw with Exhuma is that it’s way too long so it does drag at times. I think it would have been so much better if it was around 15 minutes shorter. So I would consider a slow burn type of flick. Every department is on fire here especially the nightmareish cinematography and wicked production design. Exhuma is very entertaining despite it’s pace and flow issues every once in awhile. It’s just so good that can just look past those problems, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from Well Go USA! This 1080p (1.78:1) transfer is beautiful. Visually, Exhuma is one of most impressive Korean features to come from Well Go label. That’s a bold statement because they put out all kinds of stunning films. Everything just pops out on this restoration. I can see why this got an additional 4K release but unfortunately I didn’t get that one for coverage. It has a few different audio options which includes Korean: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, Korean: Dolby Digital 2.0, English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, and English: Dolby Digital 2.0 tracks on the disc. The audio is fantastic here. All of the dialogue is crystal clear, the creepy atmosphere is elevated, and the music has a killer boost to it. It has English SDH and French subtitles. It has the almost 4 minute “Making Of” feature. It has interviews with the director and the cast from the horror production. They chat about the actors and their characters in this. They bring up their chemistry. They talk about working with Jang Jae-Hyun. They point some of their favorite elements from Exhuma here. It has the “Trailer” for Exhuma and a variety of Well Go USA “Trailers”. It comes with a very shiny slipcover and it’s one of cooler ones from the label. It’s available everywhere in a few weeks, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
