Doom Patrol Season 4 Blu Ray Review (Warner Bros.)

Doom Patrol is an superhero television series developed by Jeremy Carver (Supernatural, Prodigal Son, Being Human, Dead Boy Detectives, and Frequency). It was directed by Chris Manley (Stargirl, Monarch, Masters of Sex, and Mad Men), Kristin Windell (The Flash, Agents of the Shield, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and Arrow), Bosede Williams (Designated Survivor, Walker, The Good Doctor, and The Resident), and Omar Madha (CSI: Vegas, 24: Live Another Day, Reacher, The Blacklist, Lethal Weapon, and Star Trek: Discovery). It was produced by Greg Berlanti (The Flash, Batwoman, Supergirl, Arrow, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow), and Geoff Johns (Stargirl, Titans, Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 1984, Shazam!, Aquaman, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice). Based on the DC Comics super team created by Arnold Drake , Bob Haney, and Bruno Premiani in 1963. This was the final season of the superhero television series that aired on HBO Max. The Doom Patrol made appearances on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Titans!!!! Doom Patrol which includes Robotman (played by: Brendan Fraser from Gods and Monsters, The Mummy franchise, The Whale, Encino Man, Airheads, Crash, Killers of the Flower Moon, Blast from the Past, With Honors, The Scout, The Passion of Darkly Noon, and School Ties), Cyborg (played by: Joivan Wade from The First Purge, EastEnders, VS., and The Dare), Negative Man (played by: Matt Bomer from White Collar, Maestro, Magic Mike trilogy, The Magnificent Seven, American Horror Story, Chuck, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, and DC Animated Universe), Madame Rouge (played by: Michelle Gomez from Green Wing, Doctor Who, The Flight Attendant, Missy, and Gotham), Crazy Jane (played by: Diane Guerrero from Orange is the new Black, Encanto, Superior Donuts, and Justice League vs the Fatal Five), and Elasti-Woman (played by: April Bowlby from Two and a Half Men, How I Met your Mother, The Slammin Salmon, Drop Dead Diva, and Sands of Oblivion) are a group of outcast superheroes. They are a powerful team of traumatized and downtrodden heroes with no where else to go. Each of them has suffered a horrible accident at some point that gave them superhuman abilities but it also left them scarred and disfigured forever. They have learned to turn their curses into gifts to help others. The team unexpectedly travels to the future to find an unwelcome surprise. The Doom Patrol meet old friends and foes from their past including Dorothy Spinner (played by: Abi Monterey from Upgrade Soul and The Curse of Bridge Hollow) as they rush to defeat Immortus (played by: Charity Cervantes from Strays, Arrested Development, and Dynasty) to save themselves from a deadly situation. They are battling between saving the entire world plus trying to keep themselves going despite a variety of roadblocks and disasters. They are forced to face their deepest fears and decide if they are ready to let go of the past in order to take their future into their own hands!!!! Doom Patrol is my all time favorite DC Comics television show. I love seeing all these unknown and underrated superheroes besides Cyborg since he was in the Justice League finally get their attention here. Doom Patrol is uncensored and uncut, they do whatever they want here. You will probably never see this super group in a live action DC Comics feature because those are always PG-13 and I just don’t see this crew being watered down like that. Doom Patrol has some of the best visuals when it comes to the entire DC television universe. I will say that they are definitely the weirdest when it comes to any superhero projects. They push the boundaries and they do stuff that no one else would dare to touch when it comes to a variety of subjects. Robotman is my personal favorite character of Doom Patrol. Brendan Fraser brings Cliff Steele to life with his dark and hilarious portrayal. It’s one of the best and most underrated performances from the Oscar winner. The rest of the main cast includes Joivan Wade, Matt Bomer, Michelle Gomez, April Bowlby, and Diane Guerrero. Everyone in Doom Patrol is top notch and they have their roles down perfectly at this point. This fourth and final season is loaded with all kinds of cameos from the past when it comes to the world of Doom Patrol. I won’t spoil some because they are awesome surprises in this last season. It has some of the most bizarre supervillains of all time with baddies like Immortus, Codpiece (played by: Joseph Aviel from Warcraft), Mr. 104 (played by: Sendhil Ramamurthy from Heroes), Torminox (played by: Tyler Mane from X-Men), Candlemaker (played by: Lex Lang from Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse), Dr. Janus (played by: Timeca M. Seretti from Swamp Thing), The Artist (played by: Daniel Annone from She-Hulk), and the Zombie Butts. I absolutely love Madeline Zima (Californication, The Nanny, Twin Peaks, The Collector, and Heroes) as Space Case in this, she’s one of the best things and my favorite cameo role for this DC Comics show. She brings a ray of light into the dark when it gets wild in Doom Patrol. The writing and off the wall subplots end up being more of a distraction sometimes. I personally really miss Doom Patrol being more coherent in it’s original run. It really stuck to it’s main story and it didn’t try to go off the deep end all the time. I’m not knocking this amazing show at all because honestly from Season Two to Four, it basically has had the same charming odd vibe so it clearly found it’s own unique style. It’s always tried to do something completely different with each episode which I understand keeps it fresh and I still enjoy it but I would have preferred it to be a little more steady flow of the actual plot. I know this show is strange but Episode 9 “Immortimas Patrol” was awful and it completely jumped the shark in a series that’s already so random at times. I hated that episode, the only thing that I liked about it was that Brendan Fraser was actually able to be himself in it. There’s a great mix of dark comedy, heart felt moments, and batshit crazy action here. Doom Patrol has excellent fx, music, cinematography, production design, and I just can’t get enough of it’s unique atmosphere. Talented Cinematographer Chris Manley (Dahmer, Mad Men, CSI: NY, Prison Break, and Thor) was behind the camera for half the season so he directed a total of 6 episodes for Doom Patrol so his visual style completely takes over when it comes to this TV show. The fourth and final season of Doom Patrol manages to wrap up everyone’s personal story for the end which makes you feel complete after finishing it. It’s currently streaming on HBO Max, everyone needs to give this one a shot. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s talk about the high definition presentation and special features from Warner Bros! These 1080p (2.20:1) transfers for Doom Patrol’s 12 episodes look amazing on blu ray. Season Four has a little bit of everything when it comes to it’s over the top production design, high quality fx, and the stylish cinematography. The English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track sounds fantastic here! All the chaotic action has a huge boost to it and the soundtrack/music is elevated here so it sounds great in your home set up. These two elements really shine when it comes to the audio and it’s one of the better sounding superhero shows out there. All of the dialogue is crystal clear. It has English SDH and French subtitles. “Unsung Heroes” is almost 3 minutes. It has interviews with the main cast and crew from Doom Patrol. It focuses on actors Riley Shanahan (Chicago P.D.) and Matthew Zuk (Fear Street franchise). They play the physical parts for the main characters Robotman and Negative Man for the Doom Patrol. It’s really cool to see them get appreciation for their work. It’s a nice behind the scenes look from the men behind the masks. “Transformation Patrol” is almost 3 minutes. It has interviews with the main cast and crew from the superhero television series. They chat about their characters aging and the different ways that they dealt with it. “Off-Off-Broadway” is almost 4 minutes. It has interviews with the main cast and crew for this DC Comics show. That’s hilarious that my least favorite episode “Immortimas Patrol” gets it’s own extra on this home video release. They talk about their musical entry into the comic book series. They bring it singing for it and learning their dance moves for the sequences. It’s an interesting behind the scenes extra. This 3 disc set comes with a high quality slipbox.
