Doom Patrol follows the unlikely heroes of the eponymous team who all received their powers through tragic circumstances and are generally shunned by society. Most members of the team were treated by the Niles “Chief” Caulder (played by: Timothy Dalton from Hot Fuzz, Flash Gordon, The Living Daylights, and Licence to Kill), a medical doctor who gave them residence in his mansion to help protect them from the outside world. Their name derives from an earlier Doom Patrol team that was formed by the Chief. The members of the Doom Patrol include dissociative identity disorder case Crazy Jane (played by: Diane Guerrero from Superior Donuts, Orange Is the New Black, Justice League vs the Fatal Five, and Killerman), former actress that can’t control her body Rita “Elasti-Girl” Farr (played by: April Bowlby from Two and a Half Men, Sands of Oblivion, The Slammin’ Salmon, and How I Met Your Mother), cursed with an entity of negative energy living inside of him Larry “Negative Man” Trainor (played by: Matt Bomer from American Horror Story, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, Chuck, and White Collar), and former race car driver that had his brain transplanted into a robot Cliff “Robotman” Steele (played by: Brendan Fraser from The Mummy franchise, Airheads, Crash, and The Passion of Darkly Noon). The former Justice League standout Vic “Cyborg” Stone (played by: Joivan Wade from The First Purge, Doctor Who, EastEnders, and The Weekend) joins the team of misfits. The super group must save their mentor Chief after he’s been captured by supervillain Eric “Mr. Nobody” Morden (played by: Alan Tudyk from Harley Quinn, Young Justice, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and Firefly). As they dig deeper to save their leader, they all discover secrets from their past connected to the Chief who gave them their unique abilities and powers. Who can they rust now????
Doom Patrol is one of the most original and best superhero shows on television right now! It features a variety of lesser known characters from the DC Comics universe besides Justice League’s Cyborg. The writing for this series is amazing and the character development is at a high level. Each main character here could easily have their own show and they are all fully explained here for this first season. This one has better acting than usual when it comes to the superhero sub-genre and there’s not a single weak link in this one. Brendan Fraser gives one of his best performances in his career for this comeback role. He hasn’t done anything big since 2008. He is the best thing and character when it comes to Doom Patrol.
He steals every scene that he is in and I loved his origin story in this. He is already getting bigger offers because of this. The former 007 Timothy Dalton is great as the leader and acting father for all these misfits. He provides a balance to all these wild individuals. Alan Tudyk is a top notch villain in this and his character is very interesting, he causes all kinds of problems for this super group. The supporting cast that includes Diane Guerrero, April Bowlby, Joivan Wade, and Matt Bomer makes Doom Patrol so much better. It has a nice balance of comedy, action, suspense, and drama. It’s well written and you care about the characters as they go on their crazy journey for this. It’s my personal favorite DC Comics show and that’s a bold statement but it’s true, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!
Let’s talk about the high definition presentation from Warner Bros! These 1080p (2.20:1) transfers for Doom Patrol’s 13 episodes look fantastic on blu ray. This one has an interesting atmosphere and the slick cinematography. The English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track sounds great here! The action has a killer boost to it and the soundtrack/music is elevated here. These two really shine on this and it’s one of the better sounding superhero shows out there right now. All of the dialogue is crystal clear. It has English SDH, and Spanish subtitles. 7 “Deleted Scenes” which includes “Flit Returns to the Manor”, “Larry Talks to the Bartender”, “Jane is Dragged Away”, “Cliff Daydreams About Clara”, “Kipling Tells Miles About Morden”, “Morden is Bored”, and “Larry Wishes Rita Good Luck”. I can see why these were cut from the final episodes on the show but they are still a nice bonus to have. It has a little over 4 minute “Gag Reel” featuring some hilarious moments from the set. “Come Visit Georgia PSA” is a little over 5 minutes. It has interviews with director Demott Downs and various members of the production crew. They chat about Georgia. They talk about a variety of shooting locations there. It’s a nice little inside look into the show. It does come with a slipbox and a digital code. DC is still the best when it comes to live action superhero shows and this a must own. It’s available everywhere right now, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
