Doll Graveyard Blu Ray Review (Full Moon Features)

Doll Graveyard is a 2005 horror film produced, story, and directed by Charles Band (Death Streamer, Quadrant, Aimee, Corona Zombies, Trophy Heads, The Haunted Dollhouse, Unlucky Charms, Ooga Booga, DevilDolls, The Haunted Casino, and Skull Heads). It was written by Domonic Muir (Critters, High Risk, The GingerDead Man, Evil Bong franchise, Decadent Evil franchise, Puppet Master: Axis of Evil, and Unlucky Charms). It was edited down and used in the 2012 horror anthology DevilDolls. 2013’s Ooga Booga was a spin-off from this. In 1905, lonely 12-year-old Sophia (played by: Hannah Marks from Daniel isn’t Real, Southbound, Accepted, Weeds, Necessary Roughness, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, and The Amazing Spider-Man) escapes the stress of her home life with her creepy handmade dolls. When her angry father forces her to bury all of her creations, she ends up breaking her neck and dying. He decides to bury his own daughter with those same creepy dolls. 100 years later, Guy Fillbrook (played by: Jared Kusnitz from Dance of the Dead, Otis, Prom, American Nightmares, Surviving Suburbia, and Ballers) accidentally unearths the buried dolls. Sophia’s spirit has possessed all of the dolls with deadly revenge. The more that they murder, the more powerful they become as the corpses start to pile up during their destruction. Can Sophia’s otherworldly rampage be stopped? or Will the entire Fillbrook family end up in the doll graveyard???? Doll Graveyard was one of those smaller budget projects made after Full Moon Features originally stopped working with Paramount Pictures back in the day. This is true direct to video and it was made strictly for the video shelves at Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, and many others when rentals were very popular for the horror genre. Director and producer Charles Band was still getting used to working on a more independent and lower quality productions during this time when this was put together. Charles Band was no stranger to the killer doll sub-genre, he was the one that made it legit when it blew up in the 80’s so he returned to it for Doll Graveyard. The script is the familiar revenge storyline but it’s a little slower than the older features from Band so you have to be more patient with it.It does drag a little bit for awhile. The casting proved to be on point considering a decent amount from Doll Graveyard went on to much bigger things. The cast includes Hannah Marks, Jared Kusnitz, Gabrielle Lynn (Red Line), Kristyn Green (The Haunted Casino), Anna Alicia Brock (Glory Road), Brian Lloyd (Evil Bong franchise), Scott Seymour (The Shield), and Ken Lyle (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3). The special fx for such a low budget production were very impressive by artist Christopher Bergschneider (Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight, Puppet Master franchise, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Babysitter, The Row, Society, Blood Dolls, Witchhouse, Head of the Family, and Vampire Journals). Full Moon Features has always been one of the best when it comes to doll horror. Doll Graveyard is just average for the most part but it has some real interesting villains that outshine most of it’s remaining human cast. Each doll has it’s own unique appearance and dangerous skills. It has it’s wild moments and it’s entertaining especially towards the end. It’s worth checking out at least once but keep your expectations low. It’s currently streaming on Freevee or on the Full Moon streaming service. This 1080p (1.78:1) uncut and uncensored transfer is from a brand new restoration from the original 35mm negative. This direct to video independent horror feature looks better than ever on this home video release especially for being almost 20 years old. I’ve owned the older DVD for a long time now and this brand new restoration blows it away. It has a few different audio options which includes English: Dolby Digital 5.1 and English: Dolby Digital 2.0 on the disc. It’s a nice upgrade for this low budget production. All of the dialogue is very clean, the killing is elevated, and the music has a nice boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. It has the original little over 17 minute “Making Of” featurette. It has interviews with the cast and crew from Doll Graveyard. Director Charles Band breaks down the film and it’s original story. It has all kinds of behind the scenes footage. The cast chats about their favorite dolls and they describe their characters from it. They all talk about working with director Charles Band and how the atmosphere was on the set. It has almost 8 minutes of “Bloopers” from the shoot. It has a “Trailer” for Doll Graveyard. It has a variety of 6 different “Full Moon” Trailers.
