Dexter: Resurrection The Complete First Season Blu Ray Review (Paramount)

Dexter: Resurrection is a 2025 serial killer television series co-written, produced, and created by Clyde Phillips (Dexter, Dexter: New Blood, Dexter: Original Sin, Parker Lewis Can’t Lose, Suddenly Susan, Get Real, Nurse Jackie, and Feed the Beast). It was directed by Marcos Siega (Dexter: New Blood, Dexter, Chaos Theory, and The Following), Monica Raymund (Dexter: Original Sin, FBI, Boston Blue, and National Treasure: Edge of History), and Erica Dunton (Ted Lasso, Bad Monkey, Find Love, and The 27 Club). It’s based on the “Dexter” book series from author Jeff Lindsay. It was executive produced by Lilly Burns (Dexter: Original Sin, Louie, Russian Doll, Search Party, and Broad City), Tony Hernandez (Dexter: Original Sin, The Conners, Animal Control, Younger, and Roseanne), Scott Reynolds (Dexter: Original Sin, Dexter: New Blood, Dexter, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, The Following, and Inhumans), and many others. It follows 2006’s Dexter, 2021’s New Blood, and 2024’s Original Sin. They are currently working on the follow up to Resurrection!!!! Weeks after taking a bullet to the chest, Dexter Morgan (played by: Michael C. Hall from Dexter, Dexter: New Blood, Dexter: Original Sin, Six Feet Under, Gamer, Game Night, and Paycheck) awakens from a coma to find that his son Harrison (played by: Jack Alcott from Dexter: New Blood, Killing Faith, The Blacklist, and The Good Lord Bird) is gone. Realizing the extreme pressure of what he put his son through, Dexter decides to go to New York City to track him down. He’s just trying to make everything right with his family before it’s all too late. Miami Metro’s Angel Batista (played by: David Zayas from Dexter, Dexter: New Blood, OZ, Blue Bloods, The Expendables, Gotham, and The Running Man) arrives with some unexpected questions that could cause major problems for his old friend. Dexter knows that his complicated past is catching up to him fast. He poses as a different serial killer to join a secret group ran by the powerful Leon Prater (played by: Peter Dinklage from Game of Thrones, The Toxic Avenger, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Avengers: Infinity War, X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Station Agent, and Death at a Funeral) with his dangerous bodyguard Charley (played by: Uma Thurman from Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, Dangerous Liaisons, Jennifer 8, Gattaca, The House That Jack Built, and Beautiful Girls). Dexter is up against so many different foes while trying to keep his secret alive. As father and son navigate their own darkness through these challenging situations, they both soon find themselves deeper than they ever imagined!!!! Dexter: Resurrection directly starts after the shocking events of Dexter: New Blood. Clyde Phillips listened to the fan base after all of the mixed reactions from that ambitious project. It tried something different which I respected but it got some serious heat. Don’t get me wrong, I actually really liked the long awaited Dexter follow up New Blood for the most part but it felt very different from before. That’s why the Resurrection title works in a variety of ways because it brings back the popular serial killer in a more familiar setting. He’s not trying to hide anymore (not for everyone at least) and he’s officially alive again in the world so it all feels more like the original series here. I loved that they only used 3 different directors for it’s 10 episodes so it all lined with the same style and atmosphere. The writing is top notch, some of the best in recent television. It always kept the audience on their toes with all kinds of twists, tension, mystery, and some wild thrills. I just wanted to binge it all from the jump so it was hard to be patient with Resurrection every week because it left me wanting so much more every damn time which is beyond impressive. Michael C. Hall returns as the iconic Dexter Morgan for this spin-off. From the beginning, he’s fighting for his life and almost everyone thought he was dead from the last time they seen him on New Blood. He gets back to his twisted ways punishing the worst of the worst when it comes cold blooded murderers. The father and son is even better in this but the best thing was the serial killer club subplot. Dexter decides to take the identity of a psychopath that’s kinda stealing his original nickname in the first place so he takes it extremely personal. This leads to some suspensful interactions and jaw dropping scenarios that end up violent as hell. Jack Alcott was solid as Harrison Morgan in New Blood but he’s so much better and fully developed in Resurrection. It’s so ironic how Dexter’s own son turned out which leads to some serious issues. Like any father, he has to protect his kid so it just makes his life even more difficult. David Zayas gets such a great reprise as the skilled detective Angel Batista. He’s put some stuff together and he’s finally figured out the mystery of the infamous Bay Harbor Butcher from his past. The relationship between him and Dexter has changed dramatically. Their friendship turns into paranoia, this is an excellent addition to Resurrection. Peter Dinklage steals the show as the wealthy serial killing obsessed Leon Prater. He has lots of pull when it comes to New York so he can get away with anything almost. He has put together a secret society of serial killers that meet up all the time to discuss their heinous crimes. He pays all of them for their company and trophies. He’s one of the greatest Dexter villains of all time. The beautiful Uma Thurman shows up as the mysterious Charley. She has her own brutal history and she’s a total threat to anyone that gets in her world. She’s the personal enforcer for Leon Prater and she’s the one keeping him safe after all his private hobbies. Charley is hard to read and she’s unpredictable in every possible way. The chemistry between all 5 of these main characters is phenomenal. Their roles were smaller but I have to give props to the talented Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad), David Dastmalchian (The Suicide Squad), Marc Menchaca (Ozark), and Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family) as the gruesome sociopaths for Resurrection. They were all amazing and unique with their chilling methods of murder. Resurrection also brings back various people from the past like Harry Morgan, Arthur Mitchell, Joey Quinn, Brian Moser, James Doakes, Miguel Prado, Teddy Reed, and Vince Masuka in very creative ways which I enjoyed seeing these roles come back after all these years. The supporting cast includes James Remar (Dexter), John Lithgow (Dexter), Jimmy Smits (Dexter), Desmond Harrington (Dexter), Erik King (Dexter), C.S. Lee (Dexter), Christian Camargo (Dexter), Steve Schirripa (The Sopranos), Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (The Lincoln Lawyer), Kadia Saraf (Law and Order: Special Victims Unit), Dominic Fumusa (Nurse Jackie), Emilia Suárez (A Good Person), JillMarie Lawrence (City by the Sea), Darius Jordan Lee (The Andy Warhol Diaries), Reese Antoinette (Bad Monkey), Bryan Lillis (Promising Young Woman), Sharon Hope (Daredevil), Liam Delgado (The Calling), McKaley Miller (MA), Emily Kimball (Platonic), and David Magidoff (Dexter: New Blood). Dexter back in a major city again, it opened up all kinds of possibilities. NY is almost like an additional character, the setting is so important to everything that goes down in Resurrection. It’s so addictive during it’s entire entertaining ride with the dark passenger, Dexter never slows down here for this 2nd chance of revival. The surprises are non stop and there’s some that are actually shockers which is almost impossible to achieve these days. Resurrection is loaded with violence, graphic kills, and it’s not shy to show off some gore. The special fx continue to be one of greatest when it comes to TV. It’s a real shame that the prequel Original Sin went from coming back to cancelled out of nowhere but I’m glad Resurrection managed to survive all of the chaos. This spin-off is better some of the seasons from the original and it has potential just to keep getting better with each revisit. There’s nothing like Dexter, this serial killer is even deadlier than the past so the future is looking crazy for this brutal universe. Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from Paramount Pictures! These 1080p (2.39:1) uncensored 10 episodes look amazing on home video. It has gritty cinematography, slick production design, quality locations, and nasty special fx when it comes to the visuals. It’s honestly one of the nicest looking TV productions from 2025. It has various audio options which includes English: Dolby TrueHD 5.1, German: Dolby Digital 5.1, French: Dolby Digital 5.1, and English: Audio descriptive tracks on all 3 discs for this set. The audio is explosive especially for the small screen. It’s packed with violence, suspense, tension, and some insane moments that will make your jaw drop. All of the dialogue is crisp, the killing is elevated, and the music has huge boost to it. It has English SDH, French, and German subtitles. It has the little over 21 minute “Dexter Reawakened”. It has a variety of interviews with the cast and crew from Resurrection. They go over starting right after the events of New Blood. They chat about some of the new characters added to this legendary world. They bring up some of the older ones that you would have never expected to return when it came to Dexter. They talk about interactions, relationships, motivations, storylines, and their journey through this thrilling adventure. They show appreciation for the performances and what they brought to this new chapter of death. It has the 5 minute “The Code Lives On”. This focuses on serial killer Dexter Morgan. It looks at both his past and future. It has the almost 9 minute “Father, Son, and the Dark Passenger”. It goes from New Blood to Resurrection. This shows what Dexter goes from to get another chance at life. After a rocky start with his son. Is their hope for a better relationship between them? It comes with a slipcover. This is a must own especially if you are fan of the Dexter franchise, it’s going in the right direction and I can’t wait to see what happens next. It’s available everywhere right now, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
