Dark Crimes Blu Ray Review (Lionsgate)
Dark Crimes (aKa DAЯK CRIMES & True Crimes) is a 2016 suspense thriller film directed by Alexandros Avranas (Ektos ton teihon, Miss Violence, & Love Me Not). Tadek (played by: Jim Carrey from Kick-Ass 2, The Number 23, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, & Man on the Moon) is the detective assigned to investigate a case involving the murder of a businessman. The whole situation gets weirder when the kill is exactly as described in a recently published novel by author Kozlov (played by: Marton Csokas from xXx, The Equalizer, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, & The Amazing Spider-Man 2). It appears to be a routine & easy case to close but as Tadek gets deeper he discovers some dark secrets which leads him to informant Kasia (played by: Charlotte Gainsbourg from The Snowman, Nymphomaniac, Antichrist, & 21 Grams). Tadek gets lured into a mysterious world of sadistic sex & murder as he tries to find his real suspect for the brutal crime he’s obsessed with. Who’s really behind this mayhem?
Are you one of those moviegoers that love & appreciate the known comedian in his serious roles? If so, you are in for a real treat with Dark Crimes. This is darkest material that Jim Carrey has ever done in career. It’s a 100% crime drama, there’s not a single funny moment in this. It’s also the smallest & the lowest budget project that he’s ever done in all these years of making films. So it has a independent feel to it plus it’s a foreign territory which makes it unique & something he’s never done before. It’s a little slow at times for the beginning but everything picks up towards the middle for it. After that, it hits you with plenty of suspense, twists, & thrills including the ending! It’s actually one of the few productions in recent times that’s not beyond obvious & it actually surprises you. It’s definitely one of the better performances that I’ve seen from Jim Carrey. He doesn’t make that many features these days so it’s great to see newer work from him. The supporting cast for this really elevates the screenplay & gave Carrey the boost he needed for this role. I hope to see more films like this for the comedian in the future. He proves that he can do more than make you laugh, RECOMMENDED for Jim Carrey, Dark Crime films, & Independent fans!!!!
Let’s talk about the high definition presentation & special feature included on this blu ray disc from Lionsgate! This 1080p (2.39:1) transfer actually makes it look like it had a bigger budget. It’s a stylized production, Michal Englert’s cinematography gives this a gloomy visual experience. It fits the feature perfect with it’s dark atmosphere. The English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is top notch. It adds to the suspense & thrills of Dark Crimes! Lionsgate is one of the best when it comes to sound for home viewing. It also includes English SDH & Spanish subtitles. You get various trailers from Lionsgate before the film starts. “The Making of Dark Crimes” is almost 20 minutes. It features interviews with various cast & crew members. It has behind the scenes footage. They talk about the film & their experience on it. They discuss working with Jim Carrey. It also comes with a slipcover & a digital code. It’s available everywhere plus on DVD, check it out!!!!
