Cop Killers Blu Ray Review (MVD Classics)
Cop Killers (aKa Sweet, Mean and Deadly) is a 1977 action film co-written and directed by Walter R. Cichy (Virgin Runaway, Naked Hunter, Seeds of Lust, Harlot, and City of Sin). It was produced by Bill Osco (Urban Legends, The Being, The Secret Life: Jeffrey Dahmer, Gross Out, Night Patrol, and Flesh Gordon). It had an estimated budget of $50,000. Two desperate psychopathic hippie criminals Alex (played by: Bill Osco from Alice in Wonderland: An X-Rated Musical Fantasy and The Under Achievers) and Ray (played by: Jason Williams from Flesh Gordon, The Danger Zone franchise, Society, Time Walker, and Cheerleaders Wild Weekend) unleash a wave of extreme violence after a thrilling prison escape in New York City. Law enforcement is hot on their trail as the ruthless duo embarks on a relentless brutal crime spree together. They keep leaving a path of destruction during their sadistic run. As the city spirals into madness, the stakes really escalate and it ultimately leads to a fatal showdown where justice hangs in the balance!!!!
Cop Killers is a 70’s exploitation feature that’s just pure adrenaline. You ride along with two lunatics trying to avoid the law and they are just looking to bring mayhem wherever they go. It was written and directed by Walter R. Cichy who was mainly known for doing scripts for softcore and porno flicks. This was only his only time behind the camera and it’s actually pretty solid for a debut. Exploitation veteran Jason Williams is one of the leads here. He’s one of the best things about this independent film. Producer Bill Osco was the other one here but he’s clearly not much of an actor. They have decent chemistry together and they make an interesting combination. The rest of the supporting cast includes Diane Keller, Michael D. White, Donna Stubbert, Judy Ross, and Neil Summers (Dick Tracy). As you can see most of the cast never acted again after Cop Killers so there’s some questionable performances here. Luckily, it’s packed with so much violence, gore, and action that it doesn’t really matter. This wild road movie is always entertaining and it’s morbidly fun. It’s currently available on Tubi if you are curious about it. It’s definitely worth checking out!!!!
Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from MVD Classics! This 1080p (1.78:1) unrated transfer is the same as the previous restoration from Dark Force Entertainment but it’s a little better overall because that release shared it with another movie on the disc. I owned the older Shriek Show DVD from back in the day and this is a nice upgrade compared to that. Cop Killers is a gritty low budget production so the look of it takes advantage of it’s atmosphere. It has an English LPCM 2.0 mono track on the disc. It has it’s moments especially during the violence and action. All of the dialogue is very clean, the chaos is elevated, and music has solid boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. It has an “Audio Commentary” with lead actor Jason Williams that’s moderated by Adam Trash. It has an almost 16 minute “Interview” with lead actor Jason Williams. He says he couldn’t get any normal roles when he first started acting. He chats about Flesh Gordon being his first big project. He goes over the process for getting it made. He brings up how Cop Killers got started. He talks about his experiences on the exploitation feature and working with some of the people from it. It has the “Trailer” for Cop Killers. It has a variety of MVD related “Trailers”. It’s available everywhere right now, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
