Companion 4K Review (Warner Bros.)

Companion is a 2025 sci-fi horror film written and directed by Drew Hancock (Acceptable TV, Everything, and The Wastelander). It was produced by Roy Lee (The Departed, Boy Kills World, Cobweb, The Strangers franchise, V/H/S/Beyond, Barbarian, IT, Doctor Sleep, Godzilla franchise, King Kong franchise, The Grudge franchise, The Ring franchise, Late Night with the Devil, and Strange Darling). The budget was $10,000,000 and it grossed $36,709,101 worldwide at the box office!!!! A fun weekend getaway at a secluded cabin which includes Iris (played by: Sophie Thatcher from Yellowjackets), Josh (played by: Jack Quaid from The Boys), Patrick (played by: Lukas Gage from Smile 2), Eli (played by: Harvey Guillén from Werewolves Within), Kat (played by: Megan Suri from It Lives Inside), and Sergey (played by: Rupert Friend from Jurassic World: Rebirth) turns into a living nightmare when one of the guests reveals that they are not what they seem. This changes everything for the private trip, this vacation gets extremely wild and violent as the group of friends start to turn on each other!!!! Companion might be the best science fiction feature from 2025. This horror hybrid is packed with plenty of surprises and twists to keep you on your toes. The script takes a simple concept and it capitalizes on every little detail for it’s smaller structure set up. Sophie Thatcher as Iris is the true highlight in Companion. This role was very complicated and she pulls it off with ease. Iris goes through hell here after a gruesome mistake and it sets everything else up in motion. Jack Quaid as Josh proves that he can do any type of character. He’s been killing it and this is one of his best performances. He shows two completely different sides in this that are total opposites. He’s desperate to end this vacation and he’s willing to do whatever it takes. The two leads have a unique chemistry together and it really drives this whole chaotic situation. The rest of the supporting cast includes Rupert Friend, Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén, Jaboukie Young-White (Rough Night), Matt McCarthy (The Other Guys), Marc Menchaca (Ozark), Woody Fu (Spirited), and Ashley Lambert (Night of the Animated Dead). Companion has a great mix of humor and violence to balance out all of the madness. This dark comedy gets even more messed up as it goes on. It’s way more brutal than I thought it would be, it doesn’t hold back on the gore. The special and visual fx are excellent, it’s one of the more violent mainstream features in awhile. The finale is very intense, it’s a non stop thriller until it’s over. I wish more studio movies were like this. Companion kinda goes into slasher territory and I’m all for it. It’s currently streaming on HBO Max if you are curious about it. Companion takes a horror sub-genre to the next level, RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from Warner Bros Pictures! This 2160p (2.39:1) transfer with HDR10 looks phenomenal in 4K for it’s home video release. It’s very sharp with it’s slick cinematography, production design, fx, and it’s limited locations. Those really pop when it comes to the visuals. It has a few different audio options which includes English: Dolby Atmos and English: Dolby TrueHD 7.1 on the UHD. The audio is top notch here. Companion keeps itself suspenseful and all of the brutal scenarios shine here. All of the dialogue is crisp, the thrills are elevated, and the music has a killer boost to it. It has English SDH, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Cantonese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Norwegian, Polish, and Swedish subtitles. It has the almost 6 minute “I Feel, Therefore I Am”. They chat about Companion and it’s concept. They talk about making it, the cast, and it’s main characters. It has the little over 4 minute “Love Eli”. This focuses on the relationship of two of the roles in this science fiction horror hybrid. These two had an interesting subplot in this. Make sure that you watch the film first because it has some spoilers. It has the little over 5 minute “AI Horror”. This is about the violence, the fx, and what the characters go through once the shit hits the fan with the close group of friends. All of these extras have interviews with Jack Quaid, Sophie Thatcher, Harvey Guillén, Lukas Gage, Drew Hancock, Vanessa Porter, and various others from the production. All of these extras were really good, I just wish they were longer. It’s becoming a rare thing for bigger films to have bonus material these days so it’s appreciated.
