Cold Harvest DVD Review (Echo Bridge Entertainment / SP Releasing)
Cold Harvest is a 1999 direct to video action film directed by Isaac Florentine (Power Rangers franchise, Bridge of Dragons, U.S. Seals II, Undisputed franchise, The Shepherd, Ninja franchise, Assassin’s Bullet, Acts of Vengeance, and High Voltage). It was written by Frank Dietz (Naked Souls, Mischievous, Beast Wishes, Magic in the Mirror, and Creepshow). It was produced by Boaz Davidson (Hellboy: The Crooked Man, Subservience, The Expendables franchise, Fallen Trilogy, Leatherface, Day of the Dead, Wild Side, Hard Cash, Rambo franchise, The Iceman, The Mechanic franchise, and Conan the Barbarian). It had an estimated budget of $3,600,000. A skilled bounty hunter Roland Chaney (played by: Gary Daniels from The Expendables, Tekken, Bloodfist IV, Ring of Fire, Full Impact, American Streetfighter, Spoiler, Bloodmoon, The Line, Riot, and Hunt to Kill) is forced to protect his dead brother’s wife Christine (played by: Barbara Crampton from Re-Animator, From Beyond, You’re Next, Castle Freak, Body Double, and Chopping Mall) in a lawless messed up world corrupted by Little Ray (played by: Bryan Genesse from Operation Delta Force 3, Cyborg Cop III, Screwballs II, Street Justice, Bad Guys, and Live Wire 2) after a comet has devastated much of earth!!!!
Cold Harvest kinda flew under the radar in the late 90’s. It’s a interesting hybrid between Western and Post Apocalypse. There’s only a select few that can save their world and most of them have been hunted down already. Christine tries to avoid all the chaos and she runs away while been tracked down by some cold blooded killers. Her brother in law, Roland Chaney is her only hope for survival. Roland is a dangerous bounty hunter, he does whatever it takes to keep her safe. Gary Daniels pulls a Van Damme in this 90’s direct to video production and he plays twins. Both characters may look alike but they both have completely different personalities. Oliver is more reserved and intelligent. Roland is a fighter and he is very loyal. Cold Harvest is one of the best performances and projects from the British action star. Barbara Crampton is great as Christine. Her whole world is destroyed and she’s just trying to keep alive here. She’s the one everyone wants to find. It was nice seeing her do something different at the time. Bryan Genesse is very over the top as Little Ray. If you enjoy a live action cartoon type of villain then you might enjoy him in Cold Harvest. He kinda reminded me of Bennett from Commando.
The rest of the supporting cast includes David Sherwood (Steel Dawn), Dan Robbertse (The Salvation), John Simon Jones (Operation Delta Force 3), Tony Caprari (Lord of War), Lynne Maree (Deadly Passion), Gordon Mulholland (The Head Hunter), Ian Yule (Rage to Kill), Shane Howarth (The Company You Keep), Lee-Anne Liebenberg (Doomsday), Isaac Mavimbela (American Ninja 4), and David Dukas (Merchant of Death). Cold Harvest is loaded with all kinds of violence, suspense, and action. It really takes you back to all of those awesome 90’s low budget features from back in the day. It delivers on almost everything that you would want for something like this. Veteran director Isaac Florentine is no stranger to the sub-genre and he’s always on point when it comes these types of movies. It’s always entertaining and it’s so much fun, it has excellent replay value to it. Cold Harvest definitely deserves more attention, hopefully it gets a new life on home video with this DVD re-release from Echo Bridge Entertainment and SP Releasing. Unfortunately, there’s no special features on this disc. This is a M.O.D (DVD-R) home video release. It’s available everywhere right now including MovieZyng.com, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
