Cheerleaders Wild Weekend Blu Ray Review (MVD Rewind Collection)

Cheerleaders Wild Weekend (aKa The Great American Girl Robbery) is a 1979 crime comedy co-edited and directed by Jeff Werner (Die Laughing, The Godfather Family: A Look Inside, Making ‘Bram Stoker’s Dracula’, Mario’s Story, Kicking It, and Those Who Serve). It was written by Jason Williams (Wild Malibu Weekend!, Nude Bowling Party, Vampire at Midnight, and Honolulu Hustle) and D.W. Gilbert (Inside the Swarm and Just One More Time). It was produced by Chuck Russell (The Mask, Eraser, Back to School, Dreamscape, Hell Night, and The Seduction). A group of comely and curvaceous cheerleaders are kidnapped by a vengeful jock Wayne Mathews (played by: Jason Williams from Flesh Gordon, The Danger Zone franchise, Society, Time Walker, and Cop Killers) and held for ransom in an isolated hideout. Plotting an escape, these shapely victims led by Debbie Williams (played by: Kristine DeBell from Alice in Wonderland, Meatballs, Samurai Cop 2, and Trophy Heads), they all use their hidden charms to entice their captors. The kidnappers and victims are starting to get along together when they plot to steal the ransom money and foil the cops after this crazy situation!!!! Cheerleaders Wild Weekend is a fascinating mix of sex comedy, crime, suspense, and action rolled up as one exciting production. This late 70’s sexploitation film combines the popular cheerleader and crime genres. The script knows exactly what type of movie it’s making and it just wants to have fun with it. This one was definitely aimed at the drive-in market. Jason Williams is always solid as the villain and Cheerleaders Wild Weekend is no different. He makes these independent productions more interesting with his presence. Kristine DeBell as Debbie Williams is the head cheerleader in this crime comedy. She looks amazing and she isn’t shy at all in this. The rest of the supporting cast includes Wally Ann Wharton (Up in Smoke), Lachelle Chamberlain (CHiPs), Leslie King (Gas Pump Girls), Elizabeth Halsey (Alligator), Marilyn Joi (The Kentucky Fried Movie), Carmen Hayward (Boss), Janie Squire (Piranha), Lenka Novak (Slaughterhouse Rock), Shell Kepler (Homework), Robert Houston (The Hills Have Eyes), and Leon Isaac Kennedy (Lone Wolf McQuade). Cheerleaders Wild Weekend is packed with so many familiar faces from some bigger projects. It delivers on everything that you would expect from something like this. It has all kinds of eye candy, nudity, thrills, sleaze, and action here. Cheerleaders Wild Weekend is very entertaining and it has a little bit of everything in it. Keep your expectations low, turn off your brain, and just have a blast with it!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from the MVD Rewind Collection! This 1080p (1.78:1) transfer appears to be the same restoration as the 2016 out of print home video release from Code Red. Luckily, that was a really impressive upgrade for the 70’s feature when it was originally put out. It definitely blows away the older VHS and DVD presentations. It has an English: LPCM 2.0 Mono track on the disc. The audio is better than expected. All of the dialogue is crystal clear, the sleaze is elevated, and the music has a solid boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. It has an archive “Audio Commentary” with Jeff Werner, Marilyn Joi and Gregory McClatchy. It has an additional “Audio Commentary” with lead actress Kristine DeBell. This wasn’t available on the Code Red release so I’m not sure if this is brand new or exclusive but this is the first time I noticed it on any version of Cheerleaders Wild Weekend. It has the almost 11 minute “Interview” with Kristine DeBell. She chats about some of the bigger projects for her career.Ironically, she doesn’t even mention this film in it. She had some nice stories from her previous experiences. It has the almost 9 minute “Interview” with Jason Williams. He mainly talks about his work with Flesh Gordon. He chats about some of his other starring roles. He goes over some early struggles when he first started out. He goes over some relationships during it all. It has the almost 15 minute “Interview” with Marilyn Joi. She chats about her career and some of her previous work. She brings up that she used a different name in the beginning. She got discovered when she was dancing. It has the little over 27 minute “Interview” with Leon Isaac Kennedy. He brings up his experiences with radio and it helped him get this part. He talks about working on Cheerleaders Wild Weekend and his character from the independent production. He goes over some of the other movies that he worked on. It has the almost 4 minute “Alternate Title Card”. It has the almost 3 minute “Photo Gallery”. It has the “Theatrical Trailer”. It has some MVD related “Trailers”. It comes with a limited edition slipcover and a mini poster. It’s available everywhere right now, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
