Captain Planet and the Planeteers is a 1990 animated superhero television series developed by Nicholas Boxer (People Court, Without Borders, and The Day of Five Billion), Ted Turner (WCW), Thom Beers (Deadliest Catch, Storage Wars, and 1000 Ways to Die), and Bob Forward (X-Men: Evolution, Transformers franchise, The Incredible Hulk, and The Super Mario Bros. Super Show), Phil Harnage (Action Man, G.I. Joe, Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century, and Horseland). It was directed by Jim Duffy (G.I. Joe, Rugrats, and Rocket Power), Joanna Romersa (Yo Yogi!, A Flintstones Christmas Carol, and Scooby-Doo in Arabian Nights), Will Meugniot (Bob the Builder, Ultimate Avengers II, Stargate Infinity, and The Real Ghostbusters), Stan Phillips (The Real Ghostbusters, A Christmas Carol, Hurricanes, and Fraggle Rock), Ray Patterson (A Flintstone Family Christmas, The Addams Family, A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, The Jetsons, and The Smurfs), Ron Myrick (Skylanders Academy, Leapfrog franchise, Avengers: United They Stand, Bobby’s World, and Baby Looney Tunes), and Vincent Davis (Garfield and Friends, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and The Muzzles). It was produced by Cosmo Anzilotti (Spider-Man, Scooby-Doo franchise, Johnny Bravo, and Rambo). Tom Cruise was the original voice for Captain Planet but he left after 6 episodes so all of his work was re-recorded before the show was released!!!! Five courageous teens which includes Kwame (played by: LeVar Burton from Star Trek franchise, Roots, Tom Swift, Looking for Mr. Goodbar, Ali, Reading Rainbow, and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies), Wheeler (played by: Joey Dedio from The Karate Kid, 36 Saints, A Good Night to Die, and Strays), Linka (played by: Kath Soucie from Rugrats, Space Jam, Futurama, Star Wars: Rebels, New Looney Tunes, and Curious George), Gi (played by: Janice Kawaye from Night of the Comet, My Life as a Teenage Robot, and The Karate Kid), and Ma-Ti (played by: Scott Menville from Teen Titans franchise, Ernest Goes to Camp, Spider-Man, and Monster High) from all over the world are brought together as a team to embody the unique power of the elements and protect the entire planet. As their powers magnified, the Planeteers end up summoning Captain Planet (played by: David Coburn from Harry and The Hendersons, The Sleeping Car, Growing Pains, New Kids on the Block, The Sopranos, and Zip Zip) to help because saving our planet is the thing to do!!!! Captain Planet and the Planeteers is such a fun 90’s superhero cartoon. It has an interesting concept plus a great message to it. It tried to get it’s audience to make earth a better place. It had better writing and voice acting compared to your typical animated television series back in the day. LeVar Burton, Joey Dedio, Kath Soucie, Janice Kawaye, Scott Menville, and David Coburn were all solid leads in this popular cartoon that tried to teach while entertaining you at the same time. It had so many known names that lended their voices to Captain Planet and the Planeteers. The supporting cast included Whoopi Goldberg (Ghost), Tim Curry (IT), Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon franchise), Elizabeth Taylor (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?), Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange), Sting (Dune), Jeff Goldblum (The Fly), Meg Ryan (When Harry Met Sally), Margot Kidder (Superman franchise), Frank Welker (Transformers franchise), Edward Asner (Elf), Mary Kay Bergman (South Park), John Ratzenberger (Cheers), Maurice LaMarche (The Simpsons), James Coburn (The Great Escape), Ed Gilbert (Iron Man), Dean Stockwell (Quantum Leap), Martin Sheen (Apocalypse Now), Louis Gossett Jr. (IF),.Hector Elizondo (Pretty Woman), Ed Begley Jr. (Pineapple Express), Helen Hunt (Twister), Fred Savage (The Wonder Years), Phil Hartman (Saturday Night Live), Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), David Warner (The Omen), Danica McKellar (The Wonder Years), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgment Day), Lark Voorhies (Saved by the Bell), and Casey Kasem (Scooby-Doo franchise). Lots of Oscar winners and nominees were involved in this ambitious production. Episodes dealt with different situations with the environment and possible threats to it. I really loved the animation style of Captain Planet and the Planeteers. It’s definitely a throwback and 90’s time capsule, it brings you back to those days. It’s a very positive atmosphere that tries give it’s crowd motivation to do good in the world. It still has it’s action and wacky villains but it was more than that. It’s fun to revisit after all these years, I haven’t seen it since I was a kid. It’s still pretty damn entertaining, RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation from Warner Bros Pictures! These 1080p (1.33:1) transfers on every episode for all 6 seasons is a nice upgrade compared to it’s recent DVD release that came out about 6 months before this one. It looks much better than expected, I remember watching this all the time back in the day and it never looked this good. It’s much sharper on this brand new home video release. It has a few different audio options which includes English: DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono and English: DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 tracks on this 9 disc set. The audio is a massive improvement compared to the past and it really pops now especially all of the action here. All of the dialogue is very clean, the heroics is elevated, and the music has a huge boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. Unfortunately, there’s no extras for this home video release.
