Black Bag 4K Review (Universal)

Black Bag is a 2025 spy thriller film edited, shot, and directed by Steven Soderbergh (Sex, Lies, and Videotape, Presence, Ocean’s Trilogy, Logan Lucky, The Limey, Out of Sight, Contagion, The Informant!, and The Good German). It was written and produced by David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Presence, Indiana Jones franchise, The Mummy, Spider-Man, Death Becomes Her, Carlito’s Way, Mission Impossible, The Shadow, Panic Room, and Snake Eyes). The budget was $50,000,000 and it only grossed $43,191,162 worldwide at the box office. Legendary intelligence agents George Woodhouse (played by: Michael Fassbender from the X-Men franchise, Prometheus, Shame, Alien: Covenant, Jonah Hex, Inglorious Basterds, 300, and The Counselor) and his beloved wife Kathryn (played by: Cate Blanchett from The Lord of the Rings franchise, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Gift, Thor: Ragnarok, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Ocean’s Eight, and Bandits) are stuck in a dangerous situation. Kathryn is suspected and accused of betraying her entire nation by her team. George does his own personal investigation to clear her name before it’s too late. Now, George faces the ultimate test which includes loyalty to his marriage or his country???? Black Bag is a different kind of spy feature. It’s not as action packed as others in the sub-genre. It’s more psychological and a tense character study with it’s clever twisty script. Black Bag is loaded with surprises and it’s very suspenseful. Steven Soderbergh shows his versatility on this bigger budget production. His previous film was the smaller ghost story Presence so it’s always nice to see him consistently switching things up. Michael Fassbender is top notch as George Woodhouse. He’s battling between his loyalty to his job and wife at the same time when allegations are brought up about his partner. The amazing Cate Blanchett as Kathryn Woodhouse is excellent as always here. She’s put in a tough spot when her own husband and team are looking into her being a traitor. She’s deadly but would she really betray everyone like that? The two leads have fantastic chemistry together, they are two of the most talented actors in cinema right now. The rest of the supporting cast includes Pierce Brosnan (James Bond franchise), Naomie Harris (James Bond franchise), Gustaf Skarsgård (Vikings), Tom Burke (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), Marisa Abela (Rogue Agent), Regé-Jean Page (Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves), Kae Alexander (Game of Thrones), Orli Shuka (Den of Thieves: Pantera), and Bruce Mackinnon (Guardians of the Galaxy). I’m really shocked that Black Bag bombed at the box office but I think it was because people were expecting non stop action for this and it was mainly dialogue driven. Michael Fassbender proves that he could have been an amazing James Bond after experiencing Black Bag but I know they always want someone younger in that iconic role. Black Bag makes up with it’s more suspense and thrill approach with all of it’s talent in every department for the movie. Black Bag makes you want to revisit it again just to see if you missed something because it’s rather creative with it’s turns towards the finale. It’s lots of fun and very entertaining with strong replay value to it. It’s currently available on Peacock if you are curious about it. I hope it gets more love on streaming and home video because it’s one of the best features of the year. RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from Focus Features/Universal Pictures! This 2160p (2.39:1) transfer with HDR10 looks amazing on home video in 4K. It’s definitely one of the sharpest looking films from 2025. It’s slick cinematography and beautiful locations really pop when it comes to the visuals for Black Bag. It has a few different audio options which includes English: Dolby TrueHD 5.1, French: Dolby Digital 5.1, and Spanish: Dolby Digital 5.1 on the UHD. For a mainly talky spy movie, the audio still packs a nice punch to it. All of the dialogue is crisp, the suspense is elevated, and the music has a big boost to it. It has an English SDH, French, and Spanish subtitles. It has 3 different “Deleted Scenes” that includes George and Freddie Have a Chat, Anna Calls Kathryn, and Clarissa Meets with Dr. Vaughan that’s a little over 6 minutes. These are a nice bonus but I definitely understand why none of them made the final cut. It has the little over 10 minute “The Company of Talent”. It has interviews with Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett, Pierce Brosnan, and more. They chat about Black Bag. They talk about their roles, the cast, the story, and their experiences on it. It has the little over 5 minute “Designing Black Bag”. It has interviews with the same people from before plus some crew members. They discuss the production design. They bring up clothes for the characters and the cool looking locations for the spy film. This is a nice behind the scenes look into Black Bag. It comes with a slipcover, digital code, and a blu ray copy. It’s available everywhere right now including MovieZyng.com, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
