Baby It’s You Blu Ray Review (Fun City)

Baby It’s You is a 1983 comedy written and directed by John Sayles (City of Hope, Eight Men Out, Passion Fish, Lone Star, Silver City, Limbo, and Lianna). It was produced by Griffin Dunne (After Hours, Running on Empty, Fierce People, Joe’s Apartment, and Game 6). The budget was $3,000,000 and it grossed $1,867,792 worldwide at the box office. There’s the first one. There’s the right one. And there’s the one you never forget.” Jill (played by: Rosanna Arquette from Pulp Fiction, After Hours, 8 Million Ways to Die, The Linguini Incident, Crash, and Desperately Seeking Susan) is a drama major and she’s headed for college. Sheik (played by: Vincent Spano from Alphabet City, Rumble Fish, Indian Summer, City of Hope, The Prophecy 3, and Alive) is a drop-out, he’s currently headed for nowhere in life. They’re as different as day and night, but they somehow they still share a powerful bond that becomes first love!!!! Baby It’s You feels like a more realistic and honest romantic comedy compared to all the popular ones during the same time. John Sayles is one of the best writers in the game and he always elevates performances with his sharp dialogue. It doesn’t sugar coat anything and it’s a nice dose of reality. He has always been an underrated director and this definitely deserves more attention. Rosanna Arquette is amazing as Jill, I always appreciated that she was always different compared to all the other leading ladies. She’s very authentic and it doesn’t really feel like acting here, it’s more natural. Vincent Spano as Sheik is very solid as the guy that’s going nowhere in his life and never has a plan for anything. He’s care free and risks don’t bother him at all because he feels like he has nothing to lose. These two have excellent chemistry together which drives Baby It’s You into something better. The supporting cast includes Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man franchise), Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket), Frank Vincent (Goodfellas), Fisher Stevens (Short Circuit franchise), Joanna Merlin (Mystic Pizza), Jack Davidson (Shock Waves), Nick Ferrari (Slaughter’s Big Rip-Off), Leora Dana (Amityville 3-D), Bill Raymond (Golden Years), Sam McMurray (Raising Arizona), Liane Curtis (Sixteen Candles), Tracy Pollan (Bright Lights, Big City), Phillip Brock (River’s Edge), and Frank Zagarino (Shadowchaser franchise). Baby It’s You is a completely different approach to teen high school feature and it’s rather refreshing because it makes it pop out a little more. It’s always been kinda forgotten about under the radar, I don’t think lots of people really know about it at this point. Baby It’s You keeps itself highly entertaining and it’s worth checking out because it’s not like all the others, RECOMMENDED!!!! Let’s discuss this high definition presentation and special features from Fun City! This 1080p (1.85:1) is from a brand new 4K restoration from the original camera negative. It looks fantastic in HD, I compared to it to the previous version from Olive Films and it blows it out of the water. It’s a huge upgrade when it comes to the visuals. It has an English: DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono track on the disc. This is not the type of feature that’s going to go wild for the audio but I will say that the soundtrack shines the most here. All of the dialogue is crystal clear, the romance is elevated, and the music has a huge boost to it. It has English SDH subtitles. It has an “Audio Commentary” with writer Bill Ackerman. It has the little over 33 minute “This is very Familiar to Me”. It’s an interview with screenwriter and director John Sayles. He was just getting a into directing while working on this project. He shares some personal stuff that got incorporated into this especially with one of the producers. He goes over the time period, casting, and characters. He talks about the look of Baby It’s You and the music from the film. It has the almost 30 minute “From Triple to Double Play”. It’s an interviews with producers Amy Robinson and Griffin Dunne. They chat about the origins of working together and becoming a company together. Robinson’s personal life inspired this movie. They talk about working with writer and director John Sayles. They bring up casting and a few of the bigger names that almost were attached to this. They show their appreciation for the actors from this. They discuss locations and music issues for it. It has the almost 10 minute “A Little Magic”. It’s an interview with lead actress Rosanna Arquette. Her previous working relationship with Dunne created this opportunity. She chats about her memories and experiences from Baby It’s You. Flashdance gets mentioned as one of the movies that performed well during the same time as this. It has the little over 8 minute “I was in the Right Profession”. It’s an interview with veteran actor Matthew Modine. He talks about his audition and what happened with it. He brings up his thoughts on the cast and crew. His original part was smaller but it got expanded as they filmed more for it. It has a little over 7 minute “Imaga Gallery”. It has the “Theatrical Trailer”. It has reversible artwork and a 20 page booklet. It’s available everywhere right now, CHECK IT OUT!!!!
