Verotika is a 2019 horror anthology written, produced, scored, & directed by rock legend Glenn Danzig (Misfits, Samhain, & Danzig) in his directorial debut. This movie is based on the Verotika comic book series. Danzig has done music for several movies & television shows over the years which includes The Hangover franchise, Halloween, Californication, Jackass, The X-Files, Gotham, Castle Rock, Tag, & many others. It was produced by James Cullen Bressack (Altitude, Hickok, Gangster Land, The Final Wish, & Grindsploitation). The soundtrack features Danzig, Ministry, Jyrki 69, Vile a Sin, Fantôme, Pink Velvet, Kore Rozzik, Switchblade Symphony, & Studio 69 from Cleopatra Records. Verotika is narrated & hosted by the wicked Morella (played by: porn actress Kayden Kross from Deeper, Sordid Stories, Porn Soup, & Body Heat).
“The Albino Spider of Dajette” centers around a woman named Dajette (played by: Ashley Wisdom from Reprisal, The Comeback, & Death Rider in the House of Vampires) that has an obsession with spiders. She creates a spider/man hybrid that’s known as The Albino Spider (played by: Scotch Hopkins from Beyond the Law, Virus of the Dead, Gangster Land, & Death Pool) that she instantly regrets after dealing with this monster for awhile. “Change of Face” is about a disfigured psychopath (played by: Rachel Alig from The Bet, The Cleaning Lady, Live Nude Girls, & Officer Down) that goes around cutting off faces of beautiful women & collects them as trophies. “Drukija Contessa of Blood” focuses on the blood thirsty & power hungry countess Drukija (played by: Alice Tate from Jean-Claude Van Johnson, Chillerama, Dark Crossing, & Snowbound) who craves the blood from virgins.
If you enjoy really bad horror movies. I am talking about the ones that you can get drunk & riff with your friends, this might be for you. I’m going to start off with the positives about Verotika because believe it or not, it has a few. It has plenty of beautiful women in Verotika & lots of them get naked in this. It’s loaded with nudity, eye candy, & so many boobs. It gets really brutal at times & it doesn’t hold back when it comes to the gore. The special fx were actually really good for the most part. It featured fx veterans like Vincent J. Guastini (Child’s Play 3, Dogma, Super Mario Bros, Thinner, Spookies, Requiem for a Dream, & The Last of the Mohicans) & Todd Tucker (Watchmen, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Night of the Demons, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Mask, Hannibal, & Mrs. Doubtfire). This last one is no surprise considering the director’s history, the score & soundtrack is top notch when it comes to metal. That’s the only consistent quality thing about the production to be honest. The script was awful, incoherent, & very sloppy. It had no balance to it, it’s just a bunch of random weird things thrown together.
The unknown cast already had it’s troubles when it came to their performances but amateur dialogue didn’t help them at all here. If you look at the quick summaries for each story above, they all have so much potential to be fun & entertaining but unfortunately the execution was very poor on each one. This horror anthology feels rushed to me. It almost like everything was done in one take. It’s so bad that it might end up a cult classic someday for all the wrong reasons. I will say the crew that worked on provided quality in all their departments but that can only do so much. Verotika has lots of unintentional humor in it & it would be the perfect film to gather friends up for a drunken riff party with some creative drinking games thrown in. I am not going to lie, I think everyone should experience this at least once in their life. It’s a train wreck that you can’t stop watching. If you don’t care about story or acting, then you might find this entertaining because it’s loaded with boobs, blood, & metal.
Let’s talk about the high definition presentation & special features from Cleopatra Entertainment! This 1080p (2.38:1) transfer looks great on blu ray. Each segment has it’s own different vibe to it. It has two different audio options which includes English: Dolby Digital 5.1 & English: Dolby Digital 2.0 on the release. The dialogue is clean & the chaos has a nice boost to it. The true highlight is the killer soundtrack & score for Verotika. It has English & Spanish subtitles. It has a little over 3 minute “Slideshow”. It has a “Trailer”. The best bonus material on this release is the soundtrack CD that’s included. Here’s the track listing for it: 1. Eyes Ripping Fire (Danzig) 2. Dancing Madly Backwards on a Sea of Air (Ministry) 3. Close Your Eyes (Jyrki 69) 4. Crimson Lust (Vile a Sin) 5. Je Suis a Toi (Fantôme) 6. Allez Prenons Un Autre Verre (Pink Velvet) 7. Can’t Stop Won’t Stop (Kore Rozzik) 8.
