Cold Pursuit 4K/Blu Ray Review (Lionsgate)
Cold Pursuit is a 2019 action film directed by Hans Petter Moland (Kraftidioten, Aberdeen, Out Stealing Horses, & Zero Kelvin). It is a remake of the 2014 Norwegian film In Order of Disappearance (Kraftidioten) from the same director. It was written by Frank Baldwin (The Warriors TV Series, The Godmother, & The Run). It was produced by Michael Shamberg (Pulp Fiction, A Fish Called Wanda, The Big Chill, Get Shorty, & Django Unchained), Michael Dreyer (Snatch, The Commuter, Stardust, & The Other Man), & Ron Halpern (Non-Stop, Unknown, Legend, Inside Llewyn Davis, & Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy). It had a budget of $60 million & it grossed $62.6 million worldwide at the box office.
Nels Coxman (played by: Liam Neeson from Taken trilogy, Batman Begins/The Dark Knight Rises, Darkman, Schindler’s List, & Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace) is a snowplow driver in the glitzy Colorado ski resort of Kehoe. He was just awarded “Citizen of the Year”. His life was normal until his son Kyle (played by: Neeson’s real life son Micheál Richardson from Big Dogs & Vox Lux)unexpectedly dies of a heroin overdose. This doesn’t make sense to Nels Coxman because his kid wasn’t that type of person. His wife Grace (played by: Laura Dern from Jurassic Park/III, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, & Twin Peaks) has a mental breakdown & leaves him after the tragedy. He finds out the drug cartel was responsible for his child’s death so he sets out for revenge to make them all pay for this unforgiving act. He gets information from his brother Brock “Wingman” Coxman (played by: William Forsythe from The Devil’s Rejects, Dick Tracy, Raising Arizona, Boardwalk Empire, & Out for Justice) who used to be an enforcer in the cartel.
Nels Coxman tracks down & kills a few of the criminals involved. The cartel’s leader, Trevor “Viking” Calcote (played by: Tom Bateman from Jekyll & Hyde, Murder on the Orient Express, Snatched, & Da Vinci’s Demons) suspects that these deaths are the work of Native American drug lord White Bull (played by: Tom Jackson from Shining Time Station, North of 60, Longhouse Tales, & Deadfall). They kill White Bull’s only son & this starts a gang war between the two factions. Local police Detectives Kimberly Dash (played by: Emmy Rossum from Shameless, Mystic River, Poseidon, & The Day After Tomorrow) & John ‘Gip’ Gipsky (played by: John Doman from The Wire, Gotham, Borgia, & Mystic River) are investigating all these murders that all sudden popped up in their quiet town. White Bull seeks revenge for Viking’s actions & claims “a son for a son”. Viking finds out who’s really responsible for all this trouble. Nels Coxman abducts Viking’s young son before White Bull’s crew can. They all go to the same location to settle this brutal score. Who will survive this chaos????
Cold Pursuit is beyond fun & one of the most entertaining films of 2019! This is Liam Neeson’s best performance & role in a long time. He is the modern day Charles Bronson. When it comes to action & revenge flicks, he’s been the go to guy since 2008. He’s done so many & most of them deliver all the goods that you would expect but this one really stands out from all of them. The script had the perfect balance of action & comedy, I know it threw some people off because this film is hilarious. It’s not one of those action features with a little humor thrown in, it’s 50/50 here. Material like Neeson asking who was the better Denver Bronco quarterback “Elway or Manning?” before he kills someone had me literally laughing out loud. It had several hysterical moments like that in the feature. Basically every character has a unique nickname in this & they do a memoriam every time someone dies, I thought that was funny. Don’t be fooled by all of that, it’s a very brutal & dark production. The body count is high, it puts some slasher films to shame. The cast is full of talent especially the leads I mentioned above, it’s great to see character actor William Forsythe get a bigger movie/role these days because it’s honestly rare. It’s a shame because he is great in everything that he does, Also, the supporting cast is loaded with familiar faces like Michael Eklund (Bates Motel), Domenick Lombardozzi (The Wire), Raoul Max Trujillo (Mayans M.C.), & David O’Hara (The Departed). This has so much replay value, it’s one of my favorite action films in recent years. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!
Let’s talk about the high definition presentation from Lionsgate! This 2160p (2.39:1) transfer with Dolby Vision & HDR10 looks amazing in 4K! The snowy & winter atmosphere really shines here. It has 3 different audio options which includes English: Dolby Atmos, English: Dolby TrueHD 7.1, & Spanish: Dolby Digital 5.1 on the UHD disc. The dialogue is very clean. All the madness & death here sounds great. The music has a nice boost to it. It also has English, English SDH, & Spanish subtitles. Both picture & sound are very impressive on this release.
